KOTAKU, the leading authority on games and gaming culture, is seeking a Staff Writer to join its editorial team. We’re looking for someone with demonstrable passion, expertise, and opinions about video games. You know the big titles, the hidden gems, and retro cult classics, and you’ve logged serious hours playing all of them. On your best days, you’re not just following trends—you’re leading conversations.

As Staff Writer, you’ll be writing about the major games of the moment, as well as evergreen retrospectives and recommendations, keeping in mind that our goal is to grow. How can we keep our core audience engaged, but also invite newbies into our fold? We believe in inclusivity here, and strive to avoid gatekeeping the games we love at all costs.

You’ll be expected to write with verve and enthusiasm about a wide range of games, from offbeat indies to blockbuster franchises. You’ll also be able to speak with authority about a broad variety of game genres, from RPGs and cozy sims to shooters and racers. This position will encompass guides, recommendations, retrospectives, occasional reviews, and consistent coverage of the most anticipated upcoming games on the horizon. You’ll write a lot in this role. It is a position designed to generate lots of quick pieces. You’ll develop versatility, speed and a nose for what your audiences most want to read—crucial skills for any up-and-comer in gaming journalism.

You’ll ideally have some established industry contacts, know the basics of conducting interviews and finding sources, and can be trusted to work with our peers in game development and PR in a respectful and professional manner.

What We’re Looking For

A writer with a distinctive voice and demonstrable passion for gaming
1-2 years professional experience writing about games
Used to having deadlines and hitting them
Eager to explore new games and topics and develop expertise quickly
Willing to take assignments (and feedback) from editors, and also able to pitch original angles
An attentive eye for the visual elements of a story
Experience working with online publishing tool

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement with the WGA-E, with a minimum of $63,000.00 up to a range of $75,000.00 annually, dependent upon years of related experience.
