The position is designed to provide current, accurate, and serviceable legal indexes. The incumbent is responsible for new and revision legal indexes for various product lines. Indexing tasks include but are not limited to writing, editing, and reviewing indexes as well as performing administrative tasks.
Key Responsibilities
Reviews transmittal forms, publication files, comparable indexes and the text to identify the state of the manuscript and prepare an approach to the text. Runs file compare program to identify specific text changes.
Consults with Editorial whenever necessary to apply the appropriate key legal concepts and terminology so that indexes are easy to use and customers are satisfied with the indexes.
Studies the subject area and topics to be covered to gain familiarity with legal concepts presented in the text and determines the appropriate scope of coverage.
Establishes a logical and cohesive organizational scheme that will provide the conceptual framework for the index. Organizes entries on the basis of either a parallel or general (broader) to specific (narrower) structure. Establishes logical relationship between entries and subentries.
Confirms deadlines and timeframes for timely completion of projects; estimates project size to prioritize time between the creation, editing and review phases of the indexing process; and provides status reports to Index Supervisor
Manages multiple index projects on concurrent basis.
Participates on indexing team or company-wide initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications/Requirements
College degree or equivalent experience, with course work in English, Journalism, Political Science, or Law-related studies preferred.
Background in indexing, taxonomies, or library and information science
3-5 years business experience
Some experience (one year) in indexing
Experience editing or legal work preferred.
This position requires superior reading comprehension with analytical and intuitive skills to accurately apply appropriate legal terms and concepts.
Requires strong editorial-related skills in reference, style, grammar, formatting and proofreading; ability to write clearly and concisely.
Strong interpersonal skills are a must in order to work with Editorial and freelance indexers, as well as with employees throughout the company.
Computer literacy required.
Strong organizational skills.
