Long Now is accepting pitches of essays, reported features, interviews, book reviews, fiction and poetry for Ideas, our living archive of long-term thinking.
For more information on the kinds of stories we're looking for, how much we pay, and how to pitch us, see our pitch guide: https://longnow.org/ideas/pitch-guide/
There is wisdom and clarity to be gained from taking the long view. Long Now Ideas gives our readers the context they need to take that view. Our stories are set against a longer temporal backdrop, going further backwards and forwards in time than the typical news story.
A Long Now story takes this civilizational vantage point not as an abdication of the concerns of the here-and-now but as an invitation to consider their deep origins and possible futures.
We're looking for pieces that take a long-term perspective on a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:
Biotechnology and artificial intelligence
Maintenance and infrastructure
Our relationship with the biosphere
The preservation of knowledge and institutions
Long Now stories look between what we call Pace Layers – the interlocking systems of society, each moving at a different rate.
Examining the interplay between these layers – from the fast rhythm of fashion to the glacial pace of nature – allows for deep insight on civilization
