Reporter, Black Los Angeles

New Posted 31 October 2022 | El Segundo, CA | Los Angeles Times

The goal of the beat is to dig deeper into the diverse array of Black communities around the region, from Leimert Park to Lancaster and beyond, and expand on the groundbreaking reporting that has been done in South Los Angeles. The beat is expected to continue its hard look at issues around equity, but also to explore the life, joy and character of these communities, its people and their rich histories. The ideal candidate would keep up with policy decisions from the state capitol in Sacramento to Los Angeles City Hall that have consequences, good and bad, in California’s Black community. Breaking news, daily coverage and quick turnaround enterprise is extremely vital to the beat. We need a reporter who is comfortable turning around a breaking news story in a few hours as well as juggling and chipping away at longer enterprise. The reporter should become well-sourced with politicians, activists, law enforcement officials, cultural movers and shakers and others. The successful candidate must have a deep interest in this subject matter and an ability to craft narratives, deep profiles, demographic and political reporting and deliver non-narrative storytelling including explainers, newsletter contributions, live events and appearances on “The Times” podcast and the “L.A. Times Today” TV show. Collaborating with reporters on other beats is essential to the job, as is a deep interest in the news of the day.
