The Los Angeles Times has an opening for a bureau chief in Sacramento. It’s hard to overstate the importance of Sacramento coverage to The Times and our California mission. The state capital has for generations been a factory of ideas, policies and political moments that have reshaped the way the rest of the world thinks, from climate and criminal justice to education and equity. The bureau chief guides this wide swath of coverage, which includes the governor, legislature, state agencies and topics that touch every corner of life in California. We are looking for a collaborative, imaginative leader who can help bureau staffers develop the most ambitious ideas, swarm major news events and develop new ways of connecting with our readers, including events, off-platform projects, audio and video. The successful candidate must be able to lead investigations, breaking news, complex policy coverage and enterprise. Communication skills are essential, because the bureau often works with colleagues in departments such as Metro, Washington, Business and Los Angeles Times Studios. A knowledge and interest in digital journalism and improving our readership is also essential.
