Who you are:
Reporting to the Director of Curriculum on the High School Outbound (HSOB) Academics team, the Managing Editor plays a critical role in the development of communicative, task-based curriculum for the High School Summer Abroad (HSSA) Language & Culture programs, overseeing editorial processes and contributing to programmatic and pedagogical strategy. In addition, the Managing Editor plays a supporting role in the development and strategy for non-language programs, which may include Arts & Culture, Leadership & Service, STEM, Business, and Social Change. This individual works with instructors around the world to support them as they put academic plans into action for our 3-to 4-week HSSA programs for U.S. high school students exploring new languages, topics, and cultures around the world.
Strong candidates will have extensive editorial skills and deep content knowledge in world languages to develop best-in-class, standards-aligned curriculum and to source and manage editorial freelancers. Candidates should also be comfortable supporting the development of curricular frameworks for other disciplines such as STEM, Arts & Culture, Leadership & Service, etc.
The Managing Editor will conceptualize, write, edit, and revise curricular materials, in concert with the HSOB Academics Team and freelance editors across multiple languages (currently Spanish, French, Italian, and German) and program locations. The Managing Editor will serve as the editorial lead for expanding the standardized curriculum to new sites and new languages.
Success for this role means language instruction is clear, the authentic resources are top-notch, and the curriculum is engaging and age- and level-appropriate for adolescent learners. You should be excited about interacting with different cultures, managing challenging projects, and finding creative ways of engaging high school students so they build proficiency and love for learning languages.
Limited travel will be required (approximately 3–5 trips per year), and you may be asked to take our emergency cell phone to provide 24/7 support to participants and parents for up to one week per year.
What you’ll do:
Language Curriculum Development and Editing:
Develop, enhance, revise, and proofread language curricula and supplement instructional materials (e.g., scope and sequence charts, daily lessons, supplemental curriculum components, alignment with educational standards, etc.).
Localize the curriculum so it reflects the local language, history, and culture of the HSSA program location.
Source, train, and support freelance editors on an ongoing basis to develop curricula across languages. Support entails assisting with production, answering queries, reviewing and editing curricula, and providing feedback to ensure quality and alignment with pedagogical approach and development guidelines.
Set and manage workflows for curriculum development to ensure on-time completion. Coordinate curriculum meetings and maintain schedules.
Identify project bottlenecks and opportunities to streamline editorial processes and improve team efficiency. Update development guidelines and train the team on new processes.
Maintain up-to-date scope and sequence documents across the curricula.
Maintain copyright permissions for authentic resources across languages.
Training and Instructional Support:
Assist with the annual training of HSSA instructors. Training consists of an online asynchronous Canvas course paired with synchronous live, virtual workshops.
Provide support to international staff and instructors concerning academic matters, including via email and video calls.
Assist with work on staff- and student-facing courses in CIEE’s LearningManagement System, Canvas.
Assist as needed with the training of HSSA Program Leaders who serve in our language & Culture programs.
Program Evaluation and Academic Strategy:
Evaluate the effectiveness of language curriculum based on qualitative and quantitative measures including survey results, instructor feedback, site visits, and pre- and post-program data. Make adjustments to the curriculum to improve outcomes.
Research and identify teaching methods, resources, and technologies appropriate for high school language instruction and classroom management.
In collaboration with the Curriculum and Training Specialist, contribute to the overall academic strategy for our non-language programs, which include Arts& Culture, Leadership & Service, Business, STEM, and Social Change. This may include establishing curricular frameworks, revising syllabi, and sourcing and managing external consultants to develop curriculum, etc.
Research and Promotion:
Remain informed about trends and innovations in the K-12, world language, and international education industries.
Establish CIEE as a leader in language education by presenting at relevant conferences and by networking with experts in language learning and education abroad.
Help promote CIEE programs by contributing to the professional development strategy for teachers in our partner school network by assisting with in-person PD events (e.g., facilitating sessions, assisting with logistics, etc.).
