McClatchy is building a “flex team” of versatile, experienced content editors who can handle stories large and small, from breaking news to sports to service journalism to investigative work, for our award-winning markets across the country. The ideal candidate is a digital-first editor who works quickly, is collaborative and adaptable.
This is primarily a nights and weekends role, although assignments could change as needs arise.
This is a full- or part-time, remote position covering sports and breaking news on nights and weekends. If you love the craft of editing, this role is for you.
The anticipated base pay for this position is $38.46/hour. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, relevant education, department equity, training, geography and local wage and hours laws.
What You'll Bring
Think about audience first and always, and possess the skills to execute tactics that grow readership, including writing headlines and social media share text that compel digital users to read and SEO metadata that elevates a story in search.
Be comfortable with technology, including the ability to quickly learn new digital tools.
Be able to drop into a new environment using remote tools and quickly learn the community and the staff.
Be collaborative and flexible.
The successful candidate should meet many, though not necessarily all, of the following requirements:
College degree or equivalent work experience
5-10 years of editing experience, preferably at a daily news outlet.
Strong editing skills, excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers.
Unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism.
Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories.
Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving.
