The McClatchy PubCenter works to produce print editions for 27 McClatchy newspapers. Working remotely, our team collaborates with local newsrooms to help select content and plan print and digital products. This position requires strong news judgment, good time management, and an understanding of our technological tools. You will also need to have good communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
As an intern, you will select a focus for your summer and learn skills vital in accomplishing that role. Possible focus areas are:
Print production: Work with local newsrooms to plan daily print sections. You will exercise news judgment to prioritize stories, select photos, and review and edit designed pages.
Wire report: Work with our team of wire editors to prepare our daily news, sports and features wire content. Exercise news judgment to prioritize stories, edit wire content, select wire photos, and write headlines.
Digital Edition: Work with local newsrooms to plan and execute their daily digital Edition. Exercise news judgment in prioritizing stories, selecting photos and using appropriate templates to present content. You will also review digital sections prepared by other editors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Write/edit headlines/cutlines that support and enhance the stories we tell.
Exercise news judgment in the ranking of stories, selection of art, and usage of available space.
Show attention to detail when reviewing pages prior to publication.
Meet all product deadlines and standards for quality.
Communicate with colleagues using established digital channels.
Other duties as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Skill with headline writing and caption writing to fit specifications.
Strong news judgment.
Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to multitask on deadline.
Relied upon to troubleshoot problems and quickly implement solutions.
Works under minimal or no supervision to complete editing duties.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS and/or SKILLS
Junior or senior in college or above.
Previous internship experience preferred.
