We're seeking a reporter to cover local government news in the San Gabriel Valley region of Southern California, for The San Gabriel Valley Tribune. The area is deeply diverse and packed with news. Cities of interest include West Covina, Monterey Park and El Monte. The area is grappling with the state's housing crisis and issues of housing density. The quest for social justice and police accountability make high-profile headlines here consistently. Environmental issues are also top of mind here.
What You Will Do
Versatility is a must, as stories will cover a variety of topics
Write on deadline in a fast-paced environment
Ability to take own photos is a plus
Along with producing stories that are assigned, the reporter should also be able to pitch story ideas on a regular basis
The candidate must be able to research and develop stories to the utmost accuracy
Get news posted swiftly and accurately
Help produce and polish strong enterprise and breaking news for online, mobile and print platforms
Cultivate sources in person and via social media
What You Will Bring
Three to four years experience reporting desired but we will consider experienced reporters with demonstrated abilities
Additional language skills, especially in Chinese language/dialects, though not required, would be very helpful in the role
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism or related field
Strong news judgment
Excellent writing and reporting skills, including knowledge of AP style
Strong understanding of social media
Basic photo and/or video skills appreciated
The hourly wage is $19.23 - $26.44. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
