The Oakland Press Sports Reporter is responsible for the speed, accuracy and quality of local sports information gathered and disseminated on all Michigan Cluster’s media platforms. This Reporter is responsible for directing local sports coverage, whether it’s breaking news or longer-term enterprise content. Schedules may include weekdays and/or weekend days and hours will vary with seasonal needs.
What You Will Do
Oversees the day-to-day sports content budget and published coverage for the The Oakland Press
Works with staff and freelance writers to plan daily coverage
Works with the MNG Michigan Regional Sports Editor on digital sports initiatives, community engagement, and to recruit and train freelance photographers/writers
Increase Oakland County coach, school, booster, athletic director involvement
Increase knowledge and growth on social media
Is a digital mentor and teacher
Posts frequent and incremental online posts throughout the day
Engages in story aggregation and posting of links
Treats the audience as partners and engages them in developing content
Monitors audience and community feedback, and constructively interacts in traditional ways and on existing and emerging digital platforms
What You Will Bring
Degree in journalism, communications or related field
Five years experience creating online and print content that differentiates the Michigan Cluster from competitors
Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills
Exceptional reporting, writing, organizational, and story structure skills
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks at once
Ability to tell stories and engage audiences using existing and emerging tools
Experience building, maintaining and engaging audiences and communities
Ability to work independently and remotely under deadline pressure and to prioritize tasks appropriately
Understands imperatives of existing and emerging platforms, including print, mobile, web

The Oakland Press, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is a daily newspaper published in Oakland County, Michigan with headquarters in Troy. It is owned by 21st Century Media, the local historical society traces its origins to The Pontiac Gazette, founded in 1843. The paper has been published under various names, including The Pontiac Press, until it was renamed The Oakland Press in 1972. Original editorials and reporting, including major-sport beat writers, are also carried in the sister paper The Macomb Daily.
