Metro’s audience division is expanding and we are looking for an Audience Growth Editor to help shape content strategies, workflows and best practice across the newsroom.

About the role:
This is a newly created role within Metro’s audience division. We are building a dynamic team spanning across social, third-party platforms and search to strengthen the Metro voice and ensure coverage remains ahead of the trends and desks deliver deeply engaging content that will keep audiences coming back for more.
The Audience Growth Editor will work with editors and reporters throughout the newsroom to deepen reader engagement and turn readers into loyal visitors. You will take a key role in developing Metro’s journalism, involved with ideation and execution, keeping the needs of the audience central to our strategy.
This editor will coach, mentor, direct and edit Metro’s reporters who have a passion for storytelling that makes journalism impactful as well as entertaining. The Audience Growth Editor will bring experimentation to the newsroom to try different approaches that will appeal to digital audiences.
This is a senior role that will play a key part in shaping the Metro editorial vision, as such we are looking for a someone dynamic with a deep passion for, and knowledge, of the UK media industry and the future of digital journalism.
Key responsibilities:
Work across desks to guide and support editors and reporters in driving key stories forward with actionable insights, generating and refining ideas for coverage
Attend conference and planning meetings to determine content priorities and approach
Ensure the newsroom is conceiving, executing and optimising stories with high reader interest that make Metro stand out
Editing, coaching and mentoring reporters to deliver exclusives and develop high-quality storytelling
Editing headlines and sells that are optimised for SEO, social and direct audiences
Help coordinate planning for daily coverage and tentpole to attract and retain readers
Work closely with SEO, social and third-party platforms teams to ensure Metro’s quality content is optimised and reaching audiences across relevant channels
About you:
3 or more years’ experience working in an audience editor role within a fast-paced news environment
Ability to think under pressure and help commissioning of content around developing stories
Excellent storytelling and editing skills, understanding what makes audiences engage with content, helping boost scroll depth and time on site
Proven experience managing or directing teams to deliver quality journalism
Excellent interpersonal skills to work with key executives in the newsroom
A strong understanding of audience metrics and SEO principles
Ability to identify opportunities and quickly pivot direction to serve audiences
Advocate for best digital practices across the newsroom
Understanding of the Metro voice
Understanding of the UK Editors' Code of Practice, media and copyright law
Ability to make data-led editorial decisions in a fast-paced environment is a must
Flexibility to work evening shifts and weekends as required
