OpenSecrets is looking for a meticulous reporter with proven experience using data to craft stories with wide audience appeal – someone who wants to break national news on a range of money-in-politics issues and help grow the engaged audience of the award-winning OpenSecrets News. The money-in-politics reporter, in conjunction with the outreach and social media manager, helps to mentor a revolving team of journalism interns and teach them the ins and outs of political reporting and data journalism. The money-in-politics reporter will also be called on to assist the editorial and investigations manager with editing stories for the website. Applicants must have at least two years of prior journalism experience, experience working with data, and excellent writing, research, editing and interpersonal skills. They must be proficient in AP Style and have experience with online publishing. Sound knowledge of analytics tools and data viz software such as Flourish and Infogram is a bonus. Candidates also must be self-starting, well-organized, detail-oriented, and should have a good understanding of the U.S. political system and money's role therein. Good time management skills are essential, as is a commitment to our mission and to journalism that has an impact.
