The Napa Valley Register is seeking a reporter to cover municipal issues and education within the city of Napa, producing a combination of daily news stories, smart and compelling news features as well as in-depth, numbers based enterprise journalism. Our mantra is that we don’t just cover the “what,” we cover the “so what.” The main sources for this beat will come out of Napa City Hall and the Napa Valley Unified School District, but we want pieces that explore the impact of decisions, not simply the decisions themselves.
We’re looking for a reporter who can spot the trends, illuminate the issues and unpack complex issues. The beat offers variety – features, political coverage, budgets and breaking news, you’ll have an opportunity to stretch your talents. The best candidates will be proven producers, with previous newsroom experience covering a related beat, though candidates with strong clips from other beats will be considered. Our ideal candidate has at least three years of daily journalism experience and is comfortable with still photography and video. Huge bonus if you can speak and interview in Spanish. This is a Monday to Friday shift, though occasionally night and weekend work may be required. The Register offers full health benefits, paid vacation, and retirement savings. The pay for this position is $24.00 -- $25.00 per hour and is eligible for overtime.
Napa County is a fun and vibrant place to live and work with many of the charms of a smaller community while still being a bit more than an hour away from the East Bay and 90 minutes from San Francisco.
