The National Newsletter Editor is a key operational and coordinating role sitting in the Editorial Innovation Centre. Reporting directly to the Head of Audience Growth, you will work across the News brand portfolio and will be responsible for deepening our audience engagement and driving growth. The role can be based in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Adelaide.
This is a newly-created role in the Editorial Innovation Centre inside News, requiring leadership skills, and is for an experienced collaborator who can build and manage relationships across departments.
Its core purpose is to deliver an ambitious Newsletter strategy and world class publishing to improve active days, recirculation, referrals and acquisition.
The role will lead a small team of Newsletter producers and work across all newsrooms and networks to curate, produce, optimise and enhance discoverability of high-value content through our Newsletters. Working as part of the Audience Growth team in the Editorial Innovation Centre, the National Newsletter Editor will also collaborate with teams in SEO and Audience, and be responsible for driving audience growth, referrals and revenue opportunities, ensuring that our audience has access to the most relevant and compelling news experience.
Role responsibilities:
Lead a team working across News’ Newsletter portfolio to draw in large new audiences, expanding our reach, while also deepening News’ connection to our most loyal readers and viewers
Play a crucial role in sharpening our digital platforms at peak audience times to produce the best possible reader experience
A hands-on storytelling and curation role that leverages audience insights to inform the writing and publishing of Newsletters
Foster strong ties between mastheads and networks and the EIC to ensure optimised use of Newsletters
Work as part of a team of editors, producers, audience growth specialists and visual journalists in the Editorial Innovation Centre that is immersed in our newsrooms, driving innovative storytelling and distribution shoulder to shoulder with our passionate journalists
Adopt and participate in a test and learn approach to new and innovative storytelling practice
Participate in an ‘Always-On’ approach to editorial transformation, driving continuous improvement and innovation across the editorial value chain to support audience growth ambitions
Work across News’ Newsletter portfolio to deepen audience engagement in a way that prioritises high-quality and engaging content; new and innovative ideas; and best-in-class publishing across our brand platforms
Contribute to world class publishing and growth strategies in Newsletters, setting and meeting business targets across all mastheads and channels
Work with newsrooms and networks to find new ways to grow audience, and increase engagement and subscriber retention
Help define and distribute audience insights, benchmarks, metrics and measures to coordinate delivery of actionable insights, priorities and recommendations.
Hands-on responsibility for the management of Newsletter Editors in the Audience Growth team

Stay up-to-date with current trends and developments to identify new and innovative opportunities
Manage a 7-day roster
Oversee the day-to-day output of News’ Newsletter portfolio
A hands-on “inbox” storytelling and curation role that leverages audience analytics and insights to inform the writing and publishing of subscriber-only EDMs, focusing on engagement, and new and niche audiences, to deliver world class best practice newsletters
Plan, produce, publish and distribute audience-led newsletters that engage existing subscribers measured by open rates, unique open rates and CTR
Work with platform editors to develop strategic best practice distribution workflows
Develop deeper relationships with potential subscribers through email and other direct channels
Identify and engage in a continuous review of the newsletter portfolio strategy including those newsletters that are opt-in rather than automatic, as part of the subscription onboarding process
Provide regular feedback and run retrospectives with newsrooms to monitor and interpret the performance of Newsletters - via daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly performance reporting
Act as a project manager for the creation and launch of all new newsletters
Build and maintain strong relationships with global peers
Be first to identify opportunities and try new and different forms of storytelling engagement in Newsletters, bringing together best practice and new practice to set a new benchmark for digital storytelling and audience engagement
Influence demonstrable change in our newsrooms of digital storytelling and distribution techniques
Who you are
At least 5 years of journalism experience, with 1-2 years working on newsletter products preferable, as well as experience working with writers
Excellent writing skills (particularly headlines) and an appreciation of what it takes to deliver a quality product
Experience creating compelling digital editorial packages, and an interest in innovative formats
Be informed about the newsletter landscape
Be deeply curious with a broad range of interests
Be able to ask questions and engage in constructive discussion about why something may have worked, not worked or how we might do it differently
Be comfortable in the data and analysis
