The Register-Guard, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is recruiting for a local news editor in Eugene.

Responsibilities of the position include being the primary editor for reporters covering Eugene and Springfield, who are expected to produce watchdog reporting on local government, understand local issues and provide readers with real-time information and answers.

This editor will help foster a collaborative culture that values dogged reporting and high-impact, exclusive work and be a champion for urgent and informative reporting that gives readers answers to questions they have about our community in the moment.

The ideal candidate will be highly organized and able to lead a team a team that covers local government, education and law enforcement beats, as well as strategically plan daily coverage for the Register-Guard website and daily newspaper, and collaborate with other teams across the network on larger projects

You also will have a track record of guiding innovative daily and enterprise work, be well-versed in using metrics to inform beats and coverage decisions, and love to coach both entry-level and experienced reporters, setting high standards and elevating the quality of their work. A demonstrated ability to edit news stories on tight turnarounds is a must.

Located in the Willamette Valley, Eugene is about an hour from the Oregon Coast. Head north on Interstate 5 to reach Salem, the state capital, in under an hour, or Portland in two hours. The Eugene Airport is just 10 minutes from downtown, and Amtrak rolls into the city center.

Eugene is a robust and vibrant town, home to the University of Oregon and known as TrackTown USA for its outdoors-minded community with miles of urban forested trails for hiking and running.
