This editor will oversee general assignment reporters on the Breaking News Desk. The ideal candidate is collaborative, proactive, strategic, organized and thoughtful in identifying opportunities for daily enterprise that matters to the people of Long Island and the surrounding area.

The candidate should have extensive knowledge of Long Island, with strong news judgment and editing skills to turn “news of the day” around quickly into deep, exclusive and unique content. This editor’s team will focus on breaking news and enterprise reporting.

The editor will collaborate with colleagues across TV/video, digital, print, events and product platforms. In addition, this editor will assess reader/subscriber trends and act on the data to help inform coverage that serves our loyal subscribers and helps Newsday build new, diverse audiences. This editor will encourage reporters to cultivate diverse sources and drive coverage that makes Newsday essential reading for Long Islanders.

Essential Duties & Functions

Edit exclusive packages, often off the news of the day, that impact audiences and help retain and grow readership and viewership.
Collaborate across multiple departments to produce the most impactful enterprise packages for use on all Newsday platforms, with an emphasis on alternative storytelling.
Exhibit an eye for storytelling across multiple platforms, especially TV/video, digital and social media. Use planning tools available for multiplatform promotion.
Demonstrate a record of exploiting public records to produce and execute enterprise, watchdog and accountability stories.
Tag-team with other reporters and editors throughout the room on big-picture enterprise impacting all Long Island residents. Experience collaborating with members of a reporting team is required.
Edit and sign off on “back-end” or breaking news scripts for NewsdayTV.
Help coach/manage Breaking News team members.

Essential Job Knowledge and Skills

At least 3 years’ editing experience preferred.
Strong leadership capability and mentoring quality.
Demonstrated ability to recognize big-picture packages for all platforms, TV in particular.
A self-starter who can bring a creative approach to storytelling. Data-gathering skills a plus.
Possess excellent editing, writing, reporting and news-gathering skills. Must be able to edit and turn packages around quickly.
Comfortable going on NewsdayTV – if needed – to discuss packages.
Attention to detail required.
Strong organization and time-management skills; ability to prioritize and juggle multiple packages.
Proficient at using spreadsheets and comfortable analyzing datasets a plus.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

Physical Requirements

This position is hybrid with a three-day-per-week, in-office requirement.
Ability to travel throughout Long Island and the surrounding region as related to any assignment.
Driver’s license in good standing and reliable means of transportation are required.
Ability and willingness to work a flexible and varied schedule to include weekends, holidays and extended hours as needed to support business needs.

Compensation

The salary for this position is $115,000.00 commensurate with experience.
