Newsweek is seeking an experienced full-time assignment editor to join our U.S. Weekend Team.
Role and responsibilities
Pitch and assign story ideas with headlines for reporters to cover.
Monitor social media and search trends to find and identify stories and topics of interest for a U.S. audience.
Able to change direction quickly when reacting to breaking news.
Make sure all stories have the best headlines, lead images, and related links for maximum impact.
Be able to write as needed.
Assist the weekend editor with day-to-day tasks, including tracking team metrics and assisting with promotion of the team’s articles
Fill in to lead weekend team as needed.
This role involves working East Coast hours on Saturday - Wednesday . While our global headquarters is located in New York, this position can be fully remote anywhere in the U.S.
Requirements
At least five years experience in journalism
Experience assigning stories with headlines
Comfortable working on stories across a range of subjects (crime, health, business, international, etc.) and balance multiple content strategies
Able to work weekends along with three weekdays.
The ability to work quickly while under pressure is essential
Familiarity with using SEO and Google trends.
Experience working in a digital newsroom
Salary range: $75,000 - $90,000
