POSITION SUMMARY: A Digital Content Producer (DCP) writes, updates, and shares stories ranging from local news flips to breaking and nationally trending stories for wdtn.com with the goal of growing website pageviews and users.
A DCP is a passionate writer and leader who takes initiative and thinks critically and independently. As the first person to get real-time news out to the DMA, a DCP’s deadline is always now.
DCP must prioritize growing wdtn.com’s web/app traffic while balancing and maintaining journalistic integrity.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Be the first to report breaking news stories
Monitor analytic tools (Google Analytics & Chartbeat) social media (Tweetdeck & Crowdtangle), alerts, all regional media for interesting and/or trending stories
Write daily flip stories (avg. 8 stories+/day) that are packaged in a way that grows pages per session and time on page while utilizing SEO best practices to grow website search traffic
Constantly monitor competition to ensure no flip stories across the DMA are missed
Proofread, package, and promote stories from third-part feed partners (Nexstar Wire, NewsNation, AP, NBC, etc.)
Proofread, package, and promote broadcast reporter stories
Work with producers and news field crew on adding video to web stories
Communicate, coordinate, and collaborate with other members of the newsroom
Manage passive livestreams
Push engaging and breaking stories on mobile app
Generate meaningful audience engagement on social media without baiting
Develop new digital content ideas for wdtn.com
Possess journalistic integrity and understanding of view needs and expectations
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Proficiency in AP Style writing
Familiar with the FOIA and RTK process
Familiar with SEO importance and best practices
Expert in writing accurate, in-depth, digital news stories
Expert in finding and pitching resonating story ideas that grow web traffic
Comfortable with cold calling to develop stories
Highly detail-oriented with an instinct for newsroom judgement
Must be self-starting in seeking out engaging shareable stories
Must possess journalistic integrity and understanding of reader needs and expectations
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s Degree in Communication, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field. Equivalent experience may substitute. Expertise with CMS workflow, digital storytelling tools and FOIA and RTK process is preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: High stress, high energy environment with deadline pressures. Some travel may be required.
