The nonprofit Maine Trust for Local News is hiring an accomplished night editor for the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel newspapers. The night editor, working with our universal copydesk in central Maine, handles the staff’s ambitious community journalism for print and online platforms.

This is a key role, as the night editor will take the lead on the editing and flow of stories and photos from both the Kennebec Journal and Morning Sentinel and sister publications, making sure content is clean and deployed effectively for print and online.

Key duties include: performing edits of all local copy and photo cutlines, making sure they are accurate, fact-checked, well written, and complete; working with the Editor of the Universal Desk to make sure pages are sent to prepress in a timely fashion and print deadlines are met; reviewing story headlines to make sure they are compelling and accurate, and that page designs are clean and effective; taking the lead on coordinating coverage for breaking news at night, in cooperation with the Editor of the Universal Desk; filling in for page design duties as needed.

The job also requires excellent writing and editing skills; demonstrated knowledge of print and online news workflow; and a proven ability to work with reporters and editors while maintaining high standards of professionalism.
