Job Description

We have a full-time reporting position available in our Newcastle Newsroom. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a news team that covers one of the fastest growing cities in the country. With stunning beaches, a bustling CBD and transitioning economy - Newcastle and the Hunter are dynamic and fast-changing regions playing an ever bigger role on the national stage. From breaking news to sport, there’s never a dull day on the road for a reporter, crafting stories for Nine/NBN’s nightly 6pm News bulletin. You are someone who lives and breathes news, with experience in telling stories across multiple platforms.

About NBN:

NBN is Nine’s regional news arm, with an audience stretching across Northern New South Wales and into Queensland. It has bureaus with reporters and camera operators in Newcastle, the Central Coast, Tamworth, Lismore, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Taree – broadcasting out of a brand new state of the art studio and newsroom in Newcastle. NBN has been based out of Newcastle for more than 60 years and has been the most watched regional bulletin for decades running. NBN is also a talent pool and career path to the broader Nine Network.

Key responsibilities include:

Be across local and regional news, arrive daily with story ideas based on important issues.
React to breaking news and know how to cover developing stories
Be across multiple social media platforms, monitor community groups and local papers for good stories
Have a general understanding of what’s happening in Newcastle and the wider region to ensure the best content is covered daily.
Work with Chief of Staff, EP and News Director on what you’re covering
Research stories, find the best talent to speak with and conduct interviews
Voice over stories, shoot piece to cameras and cross live when required
Think innovatively about how to tell stories across television and digital
Deliver to tight deadlines
Cultivate a strong network of contacts
Perform other duties such as radio interviews to promote the news bulletin as reasonably required
Be active on social media to promote the news bulletin

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in journalism/communications or equivalent
Experience in television journalism and writing stories
Confidence across multiple journalism platforms, television, digital, socials etc.
Writing experience for broadcast, ability to package for TV news
Strong relationship and network building skills
Seamless and crisp writing and communication skills,
Ability to engage peers, supervisors and interviewees in active, open and productive dialogue; absorb information and act accordingly; proactive in discussing solutions and raising ideas; builds strong relationships, both internally and externally
Knowledge in producing
An abundance of ideas, energy and the ability to work well as part of a team
