WUNC’s Capitol Bureau Chief is one of the most important and high-profile reporting positions in the state of North Carolina. The CBC covers all aspects of politics and government, with an eye toward enterprise, compelling, meaningful coverage of how politics and government in North Carolina impacts residents. The CBC has significant input into how that mandate is met. Previous individuals in this position have hosted the very popular and long-running WUNC Politics Podcast; interviewed governors, presidential candidates, U.S. Senators, and other leaders; published sound-and-data-rich stories on campaign spending, gerrymandering, and voter integrity; hosted conversations at WUNC-sponsored events; and embarked on a wide variety of other journalistic efforts. It is based in Raleigh, NC. This is an important position at WUNC and is treated as such. WUNC is one of the more well-resourced public radio stations in the country. The work culture is flexible and invigorating, with an eye toward rewarding strong performance and creating stability and sustainable professional growth within the newsroom. Collegiality, a sense of humor, and a strong appreciation for the mission and future of public media are other valued traits. WUNC seeks someone with extensive experience reporting on politics and government at the state level, preferably with an established reputation and/or a vision for delivering creative and important stories and content across all of WUNC’s platforms. The CBC will consult with WUNC’s editors to advise coverage on other beats that are touched by politics, such as education, environment, healthcare, etc.
