Editor, Generative AI in the Newsroom (GAIN)

Northwestern University’s Generative AI in the Newsroom (GAIN) initiative is looking to hire a full-time editor to help us cover how generative AI is reshaping journalism. The editor will work on a cross-disciplinary, grant-funded project with the Computational Journalism Lab and the Knight Lab teams to help communicate learnings from the prototypes we build, assess developments in relevant technologies, share media-industry best practices, develop informational resources (e.g. how-to guides), profile leading figures, and generally edit and shape contributions from freelancers, students, and researchers. The site covers technology advances, relevant research, ethics issues, legal and regulatory developments, broader impacts on the media (e.g. disinformation, labor), and industry needs.

Specific Responsibilities

Help strategize a plan for weekly publishing
Coordinate with Northwestern faculty & staff, student contributors, and external contributors by helping to identify content and shape drafts.
Identify freelance contributors, assign them relevant stories, and edit their output.
Pitches media on stories from the above beats.
Periodically develop their own written articles and essays, or curate other unique contributions.
Promote and help coordinate the distribution of the content through various channels.

Monitor analytics and help measure impact from the site.

Minimum Qualifications

Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university in a relevant field.
Familiarity with generative ai and news media.
Editing experience working at a news outlet, journalism organization, research center or university.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

Passion for and understanding of ai and how it intersects with the news industry (including local).
Ability to work collaboratively internally with both northwestern colleagues and external journalism organizations and scholars.
Strong communication, organizational, and public speaking skills
Ability to work quickly and on deadline

Preferred Qualifications

Experience writing or editing stories about (generative) ai for news, including data-driven or other analytic stories.
Experience prototyping or experimenting with (generative) a.i
Experience creating or editing data-driven journalism.
Professional editing experience working at a news outlet, journalism organization, research center, or university.

Target hiring range for this position will be between $70,000-$75,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data
