Summary Of Position
NRECA’s Communications department collaborates with members and other partners to tell the electric cooperative story with national and local impact. We execute strategic and creative solutions that influence and inspire action. We are looking for an experienced energy/general-assignment reporter/writer with the ability to find innovative, engaging ways to bring NRECA and member stories to diverse audiences. Responsibilities include ensuring web content is well-written, accurate, up-to-date and strategic. Writing is primarily for NRECA’s two websites (electric.coop and cooperative.com) and the association’s monthly magazine. The position also includes involvement with planning and producing of NRECA’s podcast.
Key Responsibilities
Completes writing assignments in a journalistic style that support NRECA’s strategic priorities and fall within the content pillars of electric.coop and cooperative.com.
Drafts and edits simple online communications products and develops drafts of moderately complex online communications products with minimal supervision.
Maintains multiple beats and develops sources and leads to ensure adequate coverage.
Ensures all content is reviewed by the appropriate subject matter experts and sources; works with editor-in-chief and digital managing editor to resolve any conflicts.
Assists with content editing for other internal groups.
Conceptualizes, scripts and helps create multimedia content (podcasts, slideshows, infographics, videos, etc.).
Ensures that web content is optimized for search engines and complies with NRECA technical and editorial standards.
Publishes work in compliance with NRECA procedures and practices for information management.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor’s degree in journalism/mass communications or related field.
Five to seven years of writing and reporting experience for newspapers, magazines or online publications, including three to five years of reporting experience specifically related to the energy industry/energy policy.
Excellent writing, reporting, researching and interviewing skills; ability to turn complex topics into compelling stories.
Strong grasp of AP style.
Ability to collaborate with in-house subject matter experts on executing storytelling that supports strategic priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a breaking news environment with quick turnaround of timely news stories.
Knowledge of SEO and best practices for web writing and production.
Familiarity with multimedia storytelling techniques and practices.
Essential Physical Requirements
Requires close visual acuity to perform activities, such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing and writing; viewing a computer terminal; and reading details.
Requires ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
