Position Overview

OCCRP is looking for a proven team leader and expert investigative editor who can mentor and guide teams of talented, ambitious, and tenacious journalists to produce global, world-changing investigations. At the heart of the position is ensuring that the findings in our investigations are meticulously proven, deep, and impactful.

Job Description

Responsibilities

Work with partner organizations and regional editors to assemble and lead teams of reporters to collaborate on hard hitting, follow-the-money investigations.

Manage OCCRP’s biggest stories, build partnerships with other media, and collaborate within OCCRP.

Uphold OCCRP’s high standards for levels of proof, fairness, accuracy, and newsworthiness.

Work with the editorial management team, including the editor-in-chief, to manage OCCRP’s dispersed global presence, set policies, and improve procedures.

Work with reporters to focus their stories, help them report efficiently, ensure the critical proofs for each story are logical and airtight, and gather news in a safe, ethical, and productive manner.

Mentor reporters from different backgrounds and with various levels of experience to improve their investigative skills.

Monitor reporters’ safety and identify and evaluate risks.

Skills and Experience

Proven track record of reporting and editing investigations. Ten years or more experience as an editor preferred.

Comfortable working under pressure and able to meet tight deadlines.

Strong editing and storytelling skills, with the ability to turn complex investigations into enjoyable, readable copy.

Attention to detail and outstanding organizational skills.

Strong legal skills and understanding of libel/slander, privacy, tort and other laws that affect journalism.

People management skills and ability to work across teams and cultures.

Proactive, improvisational, and able to take charge with little guidance.

Well-versed in international politics, corruption, and organized crime.

Strong familiarity with any of the following regions is a plus (but not required):

Central and Eastern Europe

Eurasia

Africa

Latin America

Proficiency in languages other than English, especially Russian or Spanish, is a plus.
