The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) is a growing, global nonprofit media organization that is reinventing investigative journalism for the public good. By developing and equipping a global network of investigative journalists and publishing their stories, we expose crime and corruption so the public can hold power to account. We see a future where organized crime and corruption are drastically reduced and democracy is strengthened. Our global team includes editors, researchers, data engineers, security specialists, administrators, technologists, and strategists, each with areas of in-depth expertise.

Position overview:

The hardest, best job in journalism. We are looking for a skilled, energetic investigative reporter to join our Pacific Islands team. Preference will be given to candidates from the Pacific Islands and/or people with extensive experience in, and ties to, the region. This is a job for an independent, critical thinker with a strong news sense. Your job will be to range across the Pacific looking for hidden stories of wrongdoing and intrigue, and then write them up in a way that can withstand legal scrutiny and force real accountability.

Job Description

Responsibilities include:

Working with the OCCRP Pacific team and OCCRP globally on collaborative investigative stories.
Generating story ideas in the region.
Complex, document-based reporting to a high evidentiary standard.
Searching regional and global databases.
Obtaining public records and other information across the Pacific.
Working with large datasets.
Building and maintaining sensitive source relationships.

Person Description

Skills:

Essential

Strong reporter’s instincts and nose for a story.
A fierce sense of independence and resistance to pressure.
Ability to find patterns in large amounts of information.
Ability to order your ideas and write in a concise, engaging style.
Established competence with database searching and familiarity with how to obtain public documents such as company registrations, property records, and court files.
Competence with online search (we can teach you how to use new databases, but you need to demonstrate at least social media stalking skills).

Desirable

Fluency in at least one language spoken in the region, other than English.
Knowledge of how the systems that facilitate organized crime (such as offshore companies and money laundering) work.
Ability to take photographs and videos.
Visual storytelling sense.

Experience:

Essential

At least four years news reporting experience.
Demonstrated experience in producing in-depth reporting, such as features.

Desirable

Have published document-based investigative reports.
Have published in-depth articles on issues related to organized crime and corruption.
