Salary £85,000 to £100,000, depending on experience
OpenDemocracy was founded more than 20 years ago and quickly became one of the world’s leading online platforms for independent news and comment. Today, we are an award-winning independent, international, not-for-profit media organisation and a trusted source of information for millions across the world.
Over the past five years, we have trebled in size, growing our income, audiences and team around the world. We have won awards and widespread coverage for the impact of our work.
As we enter the next phase of openDemocracy’s evolution, we are seeking a visionary and ambitious new editor-in-chief to lead our international team of journalists and editors, nurture talent, help us build and diversify our audiences, and grow our profile and impact.
As editor-in-chief, you’ll share our belief that brilliant journalism can be a force for positive change in the fight for a more equitable, honest and sustainable world. You’ll be committed to building a more inclusive and diverse media ecosystem. And you’ll appreciate that the threats to democracy, to rights and to the planet are inherently connected to one another and invariably transcend borders.
You’ll have a deep understanding of the practice of journalism and a track record of inspiring and inclusive leadership as an editor. You’ll have particular experience and understanding of how good journalism can lead to game-changing campaigns, legal or policy change, and create pivotal shifts in national or global conversations. You’ll be a proud troublemaker for those with power and a steadfast ally to those without: a champion of new voices and a supportive enabler and mentor for diverse, passionate and talented teams.
