Are you passionate about breaking news? Do you follow the news cycle with a razor sharp eye? Patch has two openings for journalists to cover breaking news. In this role, you will:

Cover breaking news across Patch’s network in the Western and Southern U.S.
Coordinate with local teams in staffed states on breaking news coverage
Cover one weekend shift every two weeks on a rotating schedule
Monitor Dataminr and other social monitoring tools to stay on top of breaking news and breaking news developments across the zone
Follow breaking news practices in all daily coverage
Craft headlines with SEO best practices in mind
Report on statewide breaking news and other topics of interest as needed
Identify and write timely and interesting follow-ups to breaking news stories
Identify and report on emerging and trending news stories
Prioritize stories based on urgency, newsworthiness and reader interest
Study analytics performance to understand the types of stories that most appeal to readers and incorporate that knowledge into daily coverage
