About You
We are looking for an energetic, sharp and self-driven reporter to cover breaking news and stories of widespread interest in New Jersey. The Ideal candidate is able to follow the big breaking news of the day — whether it be traffic, weather, or crime — while also developing interesting and engaging stories of statewide interest. They know what readers in New Jersey care about and show up each day with a number of story ideas on those topics, which include everything from education, real estate and finance, to dining, business news and more.
Responsibilities
Responsible for researching and reporting 3 to 6 stories a day, including everything from breaking news to investigative reporting
Ability to find and research interesting story angles that will drive new audience and keep existing readers engaged
Ability to react swiftly to breaking news, verifying facts and writing the story quickly
Diligent about keeping up to date on issues in New Jersey that are emerging on competitor websites as well as social media and other channels
Will occasionally be asked to remotely cover news in NYC as assigned
Most important skills to have:
Strong news judgment coupled with an innate curiosity about local issues of significance
Able to adapt quickly in a fast-moving environment, with the ability to pivot assignments as the news cycle demands
Ability to work quickly and accurately, as well as cohesively with a remote team of journalists
Knowledge of SEO best practices
Ability to craft interesting and engaging headlines
Comprehensive knowledge of New Jersey
Experience using social media to drive audience and engagement
Compensation Range:
Annual salary: $50,000 - 60,000 (Commensurate with experience)
