Oooh … what’s this new magazine we see, coming in soft on little cat feet? Catnip! The Broccoli team is kicking off work on a joyful, sweet, sometimes silly but always smart celebration of all things cat, and we are looking for your stories. Here are some ideas to get you thinking, and you can also peruse our collection of visual cat treats on Instagram:
- Cultural Touchstones: Deep dives into iconic cats in pop culture—think Garfield (where is he now?) or the “hang in there” poster.
- Great Cats: Explorations of fine felines in history or literature.
- Cat Tales: How do cats show up in different stories in different cultures?
- Cat Fanciers: Profiles of humans with an extraordinary connection to cats. Could be a scientist, an artist, or just a person with a collection of thousands of cat cross-stitch samplers. Must go beyond “Wow! This cool person has a cat,” though.
- Lost and Found: How do cats find their way home?
- This is just a rough sketch of some ideas we’re interested in, but it’s just scratching the surface of the cat story scratching post, so feel free to send us other ideas that you think might work.
Some helpful notes:
- It’s fun! Catnip is a magazine of joy and appreciation, so stories exploring challenging themes that might skew sad or problematic (think ethical quandaries around domestication, big cats in cages, feral cat rescues) are not a good fit.
- While we may include product or brand features written by our in-house team, we’re not accepting pitches about brands or brand founders from writers or PR agents.
- Pitches are due by 9:00 A.M. January 6, 2023. We’ll send out another reminder in early January.
Send all pitches to editors@broccolimag.com. Use the pitch email to convey your voice and tone, and be sure to include a suggested format and proposed length. If you pitch, be willing to embark on a collaborative and involved editing process with Broccoli’s editorial team (there will be edits!). Rates will be $.50/word, negotiated as a flat fee upon commission. We work with writers from anywhere in the world.
