We’re entering a whole new era as we prepare to relaunch as The Midst in 2023 and can’t wait to hear your story ideas for this holiday season and beyond! Below is a list of story categories that we’re seeking, along with guidelines on our editorial style and submission process. Pitches needed: We will be publishing three gift guides this holiday season. We want interesting and useful gift guides that are timely for the holiday season but also evergreen for the rest of the year. Niche topics welcome! Must include: a mix of links to products on Amazon and other sites (some of our other affiliate brands include Target, Uncommon Goods, Bookshop.org, Hers, and Sephora). Not all of the links need to be affiliates but the goal is to include at least half affiliate links (we would help with generating the affiliate link for you).
- Word count: 1,000-1,500 words
- Pay rate: $200 per gift guide
PRODUCT/SERVICE REVIEWS AND ROUND-UPS. INTERVIEWS WITH INSPIRING, SEMI-FAMOUS OR WELL-KNOWN GALS. Pitches needed: We are taking suggestions for women in their late 30s to early 50s who are doing big things and/or have a large following. Possible subjects: Jenna Fagnan, CEO & founder of The Rock’s Teremana Tequila; Arlan Hamilton, founder and manager of Backstage Capital which invests in companies started by women, people of color, and LGBTQ individuals. Must include: references to credible sources that back up points; Word count: 1,500-2,000 words, Pay rate: $200 a piece
PERSONAL ESSAYS AND OPINION ARTICLES. Pitches needed: We’re open to any topics that would interest our target audience of women in their late 30s to early 50s. Must include: your angle or hook (what makes your story unique). Word count: 1,000-2,000 words. Pay rate: Unpaid for now (hoping to change in the near future!). However, we will publish the piece on Jumbleandflow.com, promote it in our newsletter, and highlight it on our social media channels.
EDITORIAL GUIDELINES
Focus on “empathetic service journalism” geared toward women in their 40s and 50s. Help solve problems and provide unique insights that can apply to younger women but will really hone in on women in their middle years. The voice is inspiring and community-oriented, leaning toward “we’re all in this together.” Let’s redefine and empower midlife for ourselves and generations to come. We're particularly interested in pieces that combine personal experience (either yours, other women’s, or both) and insight with thoughtful "action-oriented" advice. For health and wellness topics, reference credible sources that back up your points.
How It Works: Email your story idea to amber@the-midst.com by Tuesday, November 22. Include your angle, your plan for researching and writing (such as the piece's format, proposed word count, and sources, if appropriate), and the date that you could file a first draft. We’ll make assignments by Friday, November 25. Next, our editorial team will convene and decide who’s going to write what. Then we’ll respond to everyone individually with assignment details or feedback for further discussion. File copy by the deadline in your assignment brief. We prefer to use Google Docs to make initial edits and share comments for revisions. Please let us know if you have any questions.
