UK-EU Reporter

New Posted 28 July 2023 | London, England, United Kingdom; Hybrid | POLITICO

POLITICO is looking for an ambitious reporter to join its London team covering relations between the U.K. and the EU. This is a beat at the core of politics and policy. The successful candidate should have the skills to build deep contacts with politicians, diplomats and industry executives in both London and Brussels, as the U.K.’s relationship with the European Union continues to evolve.

You will deliver scoops and sharply written stories. Working as part of a team in London, you'll be responsible for producing a weekly newsletter and live news updates throughout the day. You’ll also land enterprise stories both for subscribers and for our free website – writing for an expert audience as well as a broader readership.

We’re looking for an independent journalist with experience in rigorous reporting, source-building and scoops. This is a full-time role based in our London newsroom and involves regular travel to Brussels.

What You’ll Do:
Author our highly successful weekly newsletter, the Ex-Files, and report for our trade, tech and energy policy subscription services
Develop scoops and original story ideas, both for POLITICO Pro and for Politico’s free website
Cover U.K.-EU relations and develop source contacts in London, Brussels and other European capitals.
Cover the implications of U.K.-EU relations for key sectors and lobbying efforts by industry
Be a face of Politico’s policy expertise at events and on broadcast media

What You’ll Need:
Demonstrable interest in Westminster politics and policy
Strong track record of breaking news
Strong attention to detail and unafraid of digging into policy coverage in some depth
Pre-existing knowledge of UK-EU relations desirable
Relevant network of contacts, though not necessarily prior experience as a Westminster lobby correspondent
Confidence working at speed and developing longer-term projects
A willingness to work somewhat flexibly
