The production editor is the heart of the news production process, ensuring the smooth flow of content from journalists to readers through both print and online channels. The ideal candidate will have excellent attention to detail, strong communication and coordination skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with various teams.
This role will be on a HYBRID schedule (3 days/week) out of our client's office in Washington DC. Candidates must be local to the area to be considered.
Compensation: $35-40/hr
Requirements
Ability to commute to client's headquarters in Washington DC 3 days/week
A college degree in chemistry or related science is preferred but not required.
3-5 years of experience in a publication setting, preferably in a science-based field
Ability to understand science-heavy jargon and language
Experience copy editing and proofreading multichannel content in a fast-paced working environment
Project management experience: ability to work across multiple functional units and keeping projects on schedule
Previous experience using XML or HTML for digital publishing
Strong ability to maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders
Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and able to prioritize effectively
Responsibilities
Coordinate production of print and digital articles, projects, and sponsored content with relevant writers, editors, web team, and creative designers
Manage the print production schedule and ensure deadlines are met
Quality check laid-out PDF pages, circulate live pages, and incorporate necessary changes from editorial stakeholders
Ensure the output of complete, error-free stories and metadata for the publication’s digital channels: web, mobile, app, and global edition
Publish articles, multimedia content, and other news materials on the magazine’s website
Work closely with the online delivery teams to optimize content for digital platforms that is engaging, accessible, and search engine optimized
Make minor corrections and updates to published stories as needed
Make language edits, proofread, and/or fact-check assigned news stories and editorial content per established editorial standards
Read content and correct spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors, applying publication styling as necessary
Coordinate creation and production of science-rich schematics and complex, data-filled infographics through production, advising the editorial and production teams throughout the process to produce art that’s informative, accessible, and adaptable to all platforms
