Rest of World is a non-profit newsroom focused on the impact of the tech industry outside the US. My desk works in collaboration with five other regional desks (South Asia, East Asia, Africa, Latin America, and China), each of which focuses on the tech scene in their region. As the only regional editor based in the US, I’m tasked with stories that focus on major US tech companies, with an emphasis on Google/Alphabet, Meta, Uber, Apple and Amazon.
Successful pitches to the US desk typically fall into two categories, focusing on either US tech companies’ impact in our regions (some good examples) or regional companies’ attempts to break into the US market (another example). I’m also interested in stories about the unique issues faced by immigrant tech workers, although these stories can be very difficult to execute.
Rest of World is committed to including local perspectives in everything we report; we don’t want to report stories about Dhaka from California, or vice versa. Because of that, a good pitch will include a specific plan for local reporting, whether that’s done by you or some freelancer still to be found. One of our greatest strengths is our global freelance network, so it’s entirely possible to co-report a story with a journalist from Pakistan or Ecuador. Think big, and we’ll figure out a way to make the story work.
Please note: This is a call for reported article pitches, not editorials or essays.
PITCH GUIDELINES
Please send a clear and concise pitch of no more than 400 words. Tell me why the story would be a good fit for Rest of World. I want to hear about your unique angle and characters. I don’t need background briefings about companies or trends (include links if needed). Explain why the story is likely to attract readers’ attention. Describe your main character(s), sources and reporting plan. Briefly introduce yourself and state any relevant reporting or professional experiences. Don’t use bullet points because I want to get a sense of your writing style.
RATES
Flat rate of US$750 plus reporting expenses.
