With youth unemployment at record highs, growth near historic lows, a property crisis and eye-watering debt levels, China faces once-in-a-generation economic challenges and a chaotic exit from its zero-COVID policy that has exacted a heavy toll on the world’s second-largest economy. China’s hospitals and crematoriums are overwhelmed as the virus rips through its 1.4 billion population after Xi abruptly ditched his signature pandemic controls, following nationwide protests in mainland China’s biggest wave of civil disobedience since he took power 10 years ago. Ties with the West have plunged to historic lows over Taiwan as well as China’s human rights record in Xinjiang, its crackdown on Hong Kong and diplomatic support for Russia despite the war in Ukraine. Xi’s intensifying campaign to seize democratic governed Taiwan has raised fears of a military conflict in the coming decade.
