We are seeking a talented and experienced journalist in Indonesia to join our award-winning global team and cover issues that are core to our 3 areas of coverage – climate, socio-economic inequality and the impact of big tech on society.
You are comfortable pivoting from writing an explainer on black markets, to reporting on the climate impact of palm oil cultivation, to how internet shutdowns hurt regional economies.
You have excellent news judgment, are deadline driven and brimming with ideas.
You know how to write for digital audiences, always think of multimedia possibilities for your stories, and come to the table with innovative ideas for your storytelling.
About the Role
As our Southeast Asia correspondent, you will:
Pitch, research and write deeply reported stories from Indonesia and the broader Southeast Asia region covering climate, socio-economic inequality, digital rights and data privacy.
Pitch, report and produce text as well as visually rich multimedia stories
Be able to source, gather and interpret data sets to tell compelling data-led stories
Visualise relevant data in your stories to convey patterns, trends and context
Collaborate with the social media team to create informative and engaging social posts
Collaborate with the video team to produce visual elements or stories as needed
Organise local or international travel as relevant to your work
Consistently meet deadlines and file concise, clean copy
Develop and maintain a network of contacts, sources, freelancers, photographers and video journalists in your region
About You
You're a fit for the role of Southeast Asia Correspondent if your background includes:
At least 5 years of journalism experience
Keen awareness of global geopolitical issues and how they play out in Indonesia and Southeast Asia
Sound understanding of issues regarding climate, socio-economic inequality and the impact of big tech in your region and their impact on people and policy
Good grasp of LGBTQ+ issues at play in your area of coverage
Passion for producing people-centered stories, explanatory stories and investigations
Aptitude for identifying, understanding and reporting data-led stories
Experience with budgeting for and organising work-related travel
Versatile and engaging writing style for digital as well as traditional media audiences
Familiarity with multimedia storytelling, including video and audio and photography
Strong understanding of social media platforms and digital audiences
Ability to meet deadlines
Legal right to work in Indonesia
Fluency in written and spoken Bahasa Indonesia strongly preferred
