Reuters is seeking an outstanding journalist to cover the Pope, the Vatican and the workings of the Catholic Church around the world. This correspondent will report on stories ranging from changes to the Church’s theology to the conduct of its clergy. They will be based in Rome and will drive coverage of this competitive beat in close coordination with Reuters’ visuals team.
This is a unique opportunity to report about religion, culture and geopolitical affairs at a time when the Catholic Church’s traditional teachings and moral authority are under scrutiny.
The scope of coverage will span in scope from stories on pilgrims descending on Rome for the 2025 Jubilee to investigations into how the Catholic Church manages its finances. It will require someone with excellent writing skills, the ability to cultivate a deep and diverse source base and the drive to conceptualise and deliver ambitious stories.
About the Role
As Italy/Vatican correspondent, you will:
Report on major Vatican-related events, religious ceremonies, papal trips and key announcements
Keep Reuters ahead of the competition on breaking news about the Church
Build and maintain relationships with Vatican officials, religious leaders, and other stakeholders
Deliver exclusives and a deep and balanced initiative file
Be part of the broader Italy Bureau at Reuters
Collaborate effectively across teams, including with colleagues on visuals, in Italy and globally
About You
To be Italy/Vatican Correspondent, you will:
Have knowledge of Vatican affairs, Catholic doctrine and global religious matters
Have great ideas and the demonstrated ability to build contacts
Have a proven track record in delivering breaking news and delivering impactful longer form initiative work
Have experience in multimedia reporting
Have fluent spoken Italian
Have excellent written and spoken English
