Part-Time Reporter

The Rock Hill Herald is looking for a journalist with passion and curiosity for local news and sports. This reporter would work 20 hours per week with clear focus on content that engages our local community. The reporter must have the skill and vision to help with and independently execute real-time news.

In the fall, the reporter would focus on high school football. That is a major audience attraction in this region from August until November. On Friday nights, this reporter will curate high school game details from social media and radio to write real-time updates to be published online. The job results will also be featured in a published roundup with final scores from the games that have been monitored.

This person also would write a weekly high school sports feature and help manage the Athlete of the Week fan poll.

When football season is over, the coverage emphasis would change. While there would be some sports reporting, the larger focus would be community/service journalism. The person would search social media and Google Trends to identify and write about local topics that are trending and provide essential utility journalism that helps readers navigate everyday life.

There may also be opportunities to assist other staff members in coverage of breaking news and other larger stories.

The successful candidate should meet many, though not necessarily all, of the following requirements:

College degree or equivalent work experience
Experience reporting and writing about local news and sports.
Strong writing skills, and ability to see and generate stories that are relevant to Herald readers.
Unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism.
Ability to build source networks.
Ability to work collaboratively with Herald staff.
Ability to work productively on deadlines.
