The Role: S&P Global Commodity Insights is the leading provider of energy pricing, news, and analytics. We are seeking a Managing Editor to lead our Middle Distillates team, part of the European Oil price reporting team based in our London office.

The Impact: The London middle distillates team, made of four reporters, is responsible for publishing and developing key Platts benchmark assessments of European and African diesel, jet fuel, gasoil and related derivatives. These include, amongst others, prominent benchmarks such as 10ppm CIF NWE ULSD cargo, 0.1% CIF Med Gasoil and CIF NWE Jet fuel cargo assessments. As well as managing the team and developing Platts assessments, the Managing Editor will be expected to become familiar with the assessment process for the middle distillates markets, and to cover them as a frontline reporter as the need arises. The managing editor is expected to work in conjunction with other leaders, but also to show strong individual leadership and assume considerable responsibility for the delivery of essential market coverage and pricing.

Principal Accountabilities / Duties / Responsibilities:

Triage daily issues as they emerge in the middle distillates team. The oil team is busy with many issues emerging daily. This position is crucial to managing the issues and see that they are dealt with in the appropriate manner.

Ensure a consistent implementation of the methodology in daily assessments as well as providing clear communication of the methodology both internally and externally.

Ensure that market issues which may require further investigation and potential methodology development are acted upon in an appropriate time frame.

Review and manage industry feedback on market and methodology issues.

Act as the critical “second pair of eyes” function to ensure process is being followed correctly during the assessment process, approving

Drive news coverage through the team. Coordinates team source development strategy.

Manage external engagement activities and serves as subject matter expert.

Monitor team’s news and market reporting activities, ensuring timely coverage of events.

Working with the Associate Editorial Director, this position will be responsible for administering the day-to-day running of the team including tasks such as scheduling coverage and holidays.

Ensure training and coaching of staff members as well as working with the Associate Editorial Director for wider execution of the oil team’s strategy.

Facilitate a healthy flow of communication between the management team and the reporting team.

Ensure adherence to the IOSCO Principles for Price Reporting Agencies, working with the Market Assessment Quality team.

Essential Skills Required:

Degree educated with at least three years’ experience of reporting, analysis or editorial management experience

Ability to work to intra-day deadlines in high-pressure environments. Our processes are daily and we have frequent intraday deadlines. Efficient running of the team depends on excellent time-management skills.

Strong at identifying improvements and efficiencies and implementing processes that continually promote productivity and quality improvements.

Strong leadership ability which utilizes influence, and promotes team collaboration and development, as well as personal accountability.

Accuracy under time pressure. It is critical that we deliver accurate assessments to the market consistently.

Strong communication skills that implement good listening, clear writing style and strong verbal skills. The ability to communicate across a wide range of groups and personalities internally and externally.

Strong numeracy skills as well as the ability to critically analyze data.

Strong critical thinking is essential in providing context around market information.

Detailed knowledge of how S&P Global Commodity Insights assesses and covers European oil markets. This is to ensure that company processes are applied consistently and accurately.

Proven public speaking abilities. This position will be an internal and external ambassador of what we do and must be an accomplished and confidant speaker.

Proven internal and external training capabilities. This position will be responsible for ensuring a consistent approach to methodology and training, in cooperation with the oil team management will be a big part of this.

Proven real-time news abilities. This position will be at times writing news and analysis on a real time basis but will primarily be responsible for driving news in the team.

Desirable Skills:

Direct knowledge of the middle distillates markets is an advantage.
