We work closely with external editors, society partners and internal colleagues to drive the success and long-term sustainability of the program.

Role

The Associate Editor role allows those wanting to develop their journals management experience the opportunity to manage their own list of journals, whilst also supporting and learning from more senior journal managers in the department. We are looking for a candidate with:

Strong oral and written communication skills.
Good relationship management skills.
Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills, ability to handle a dynamic and demanding workload efficiently.
Good attention to detail and accuracy.
Broad understanding of the journal publication process and industry.
Financial awareness relating to journal profit and loss statements, and the commercial publishing environment.
Ability to work without close supervision.

Your New Role

Key responsibilities of the role:

Actively manage a portfolio of journals, provide information and advice to journal editors and partner societies to help them improve the quality of content published in their journals. Compile and assess key data and metrics, using this data to inform recommendations on each journal’s development strategy.
Actively develop the profitability of assigned journals, with a view to maximining revenues and controlling costs. Implement activities with other departments and external partners to ensure action taken where necessary to make improvements to financial performance.
Actively manage journal editor performance, establishing and implementing best practice with regard to manuscript submission, peer review process, revision and resubmission policies, and optimal editorial board function. Undertake recruitment of new editors or replace editors where necessary.
Provide timely and accurate title level support to Senior/Publishing Editor/Publishers and the department in order to ensure a high-quality service to journal editors, editorial boards and publishing partners.
Successfully negotiate editor and society contract renewals, produce profit and loss statements, prepare draft contracts and lead contract approval process through to contract signature.
Lead journal editorial board meetings and represent Sage at conferences, where appropriate.
Liaise with other departments to ensure that the journals are produced, marketed and distributed in an appropriate way and within acceptable costs.
Where required, be responsible for handling acquired titles from contract through to publication by Sage by coordinating with other departments to ensure necessary actions are completed on time.
Actively participate in department projects and stakeholder groups aligned to Sage’s cultural and business objectives.
