Hearst Newspapers is seeking a Newsletter Editor to write for and curate a newsletter focusing on Austin, Texas. The job requires strong news judgment as well as audience development experience. The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues at the San Antonio Express-News, Houston Chronicle and Hearst Texas Austin Bureau. Candidates should be comfortable finding stories, organizing content and writing on deadline. The Newsletter Editor should have their finger on the pulse of trends and topics unique to Austin. A successful candidate will make audience-informed coverage decisions that directly grow readership.
The Responsibilities
Write fresh pieces and pull from existing staff content, across a range of topics, to create a cohesive daily newsletter.
Work in production systems to publish stories, build a newsletter framework and package content.
Act as the leading voice of the newsletter, establishing its tone and tenor, while connecting with our audience.
Identify audience trends over time and make coverage decisions accordingly.
Build a list of local sources that can be called upon for insights, story ideas and scoops.
Help lead the audience development strategy of the publication, including newsletter list growth.
What will it take to be successful?
A successful Newsletter Editor will have a knack for finding interesting, useful stories and distilling the information for curious readers. They’ll hone a voice for the product that speaks to a distinctly Austin audience. They will be a self-starter and organized – able to juggle daily/weekly deadlines and collaborate well across newsrooms and teams. They will work a 40-hour week Monday through Friday from Austin.
Ideal candidates will be able to showcase one or more of the following; we do not expect candidates to be proficient in every area:
5-plus years working as a reporter, ideally with some editing or management experience.
A collaborative self-starter who can organize, prioritize and work under pressure.
A headline master, quickly able to distill a story into its most shareable elements.
Experience using Google Trends and other analytics software to inform content strategy and pivot based on performance.
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism preferred.
Comfort with constantly evolving technology, and ability to adapt quickly.
