The Austin Reporter will contribute 2 to 4 blurbs daily to the Austin newsletter. These could be mini stories, a roundup of events or a hot take on the mayor’s latest tweet. Their job is to be creative and concise. The Austin Reporter will keep a finger on the pulse of the city — what people are talking about and what readers are interested in. We need a self-starter with high standards who can collaborate well, has excellent communication skills and is comfortable taking feedback.
Responsibilities:
Pitch and create 2 to 4 newsletter blurbs per day, based on what's trending in market. This will include alternative story forms, like listicles or standalone graphics.
Maintain a content calendar of evergreen ideas to pull from on any given day.
Create and maintain a steady supply of sources for story ideas that lead to diverse coverage.
Help manage social media accounts for the Austin newsletter brand, posting content and growing the off-platform audience.
Critical Skills:
This position is full-time
3 to 5 years experience in a similar position required.
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism preferred.
Solid news judgment and a strong understanding of the local market.
Proficient writer, fact-checker, and familiar with AP Style
Baseline knowledge of analytics and CMS tools such as Chartbeat and Google Analytics.
Organized and able to meet deadlines in daily and breaking news situations.
