Deputy Opinion Editor
Help take the award-winning San Antonio Express-News opinion team to the next level.
There has never been a more exciting time to deliver opinion journalism in Texas and San Antonio. The Deputy Opinion Editor will play a key role in establishing editorial coverage priorities, digital strategy and long-term projects. This role will collaborate with all members of the opinion team as we seek to connect with readers, promote a diverse range of viewpoints and grow our digital audience.
The Deputy Opinion Editor will have their hand in every aspect of our opinion coverage, writing two to three editorials a week on local and state issues, soliciting and editing commentaries, and working with other team members to envision and identify long-term projects based on original reporting. We want to hear from candidates from all backgrounds, and especially those who are familiar with the South Texas region. Applicants should submit a resume and cover letter.
What will you do?
Write two to three editorials a week on state and local issues.
Solicit and edit commentaries while working closely with our opinion editor and commentary editor.
Collaborate with the opinion editor to establish coverage priorities, quarterly editorial board projects and digital strategy.
Occasionally lead editorial board meetings and represent the news organization to community groups and stakeholders.
Help develop an opinion team podcast and newsletter strategy.
What will it take to be successful?
Ideal candidates will have excellent news judgment and an ability to convey complex, sensitive issues through clear, persuasive writing. They will be committed to publishing a diverse range of views. They will work collaboratively with other opinion team members as well as across departments. They will believe that journalism can make the world a better place.
6 - 10 years of experience in daily journalism, preferably with some background in opinion writing.
An ability to juggle breaking news and daily takes as well as long-term projects such as leading an editorial board crusade, envisioning an outside commentary series or writing an extended essay.
An interest in digital publishing.
A commitment to publishing a diverse range of views while modeling civil discourse.
Excellent communication and writing skills.
Comfortable with Hybrid. We require 3 days a week in office.
