The population of unhoused people in Los Angeles County is equivalent to that of a small city. Tens of thousands of people are living on the streets, in tents, under freeways; thousands more use the piecemeal shelter system, couch surf, or live in cars, out of view. As with any population, their experiences are not monolithic. Yet the prevailing, stereotypical view of the unhoused depicts them as outcasts either unable or unwilling to secure permanent housing. And, as with any population, the reality is much more complex and nuanced.? The KPCC + LAist newsroom seeks a reporter who will shift the narrative from institutions and housing-secure Angelenos to the full, lived experiences of unhoused populations. The reporter will work with their editor to create a distinctive, original coverage plan that emphasizes principles of engaged journalism and diversity, equity, and inclusion, and seek solutions to one of our region’s most urgent and seemingly intractable issues.?? The reporter will create original features for radio, digital, and on demand, as well as reporting on daily news as needed. Experience in audio reporting is preferred but not required. We do ask that applicants have a willingness and aptitude to learn those skills, which include producing recorded stories and the ability to be interviewed live on air. We value creativity in style and approach, and are open to bold, experimental ideas.? We are seeking a journalist who will produce unique reporting that stands out in the crowd.? If that sounds like you, we encourage you to apply, even if you don’t tick off every box.
