Sportswriter

New Posted 3 January 2024 | St. Charles, Illinois | Shaw Media

Shaw Media is seeking an enthusiastic sportswriter to assist in local sports coverage for the Kane County Chronicle, based in St. Charles.

We cover the area’s high schools and other sports happenings in and around the Tri-Cities of St. Charles, Batavia, and Geneva.

We are looking for a reporter who relishes taking chances with innovative enterprise and feature ideas, and who knows when to incorporate feature elements into a game story. We also are looking for someone who can use photos and video in his or her reporting, and who understands that it’s not enough just to tell interesting stories in interesting ways – you also have to make stories resonate with online readers, particularly through social media.

Qualified candidates must have experience in a deadline-driven environment and have demonstrated the ability to write clear, concise, and engaging sports stories and features. Candidates should possess a passion for community sports journalism and the ability to work collaboratively with photographers and other reporters to produce a great newspaper and website. They should be able to engage and grow our audience through social media channels.

The successful candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, reliable transportation, and an acceptable motor vehicle record.

Two years of professional experience are preferred, but recent college graduates will be considered. Solid knowledge of AP Style and grammar is required. Experience with the Web and multimedia is a plus.
