New Posted 9 November 2022 | Kenai, Alaska | Sound Publishing

The Homer News (www.homernews.com) seeks a senior reporter to cover the communities of Alaska’s Southern Kenai Peninsula, with a focus on the city of Homer. This position will work out of Kenai, AK at our Kenai Pennisula Clarion location with the need to travel to Homer twice per week. The ideal candidate will be interested in covering a diversity of community events and issues — everything from arts and public safety to fishing, business, sports, the environment, and local government. Part of Sound Publishing, the Homer News is a sister paper to the other two Alaska papers operated by Sound, the Kenai Peninsula Clarion and the Juneau Empire, the newspaper of Alaska’s state capital. The senior reporter will be the lead reporter at the weekly Homer News and create weekly copy for the print edition and breaking news for the web. Beyond completing weekly assigned stories, reporters are expected to develop leads and generate story ideas. The senior reporter will have responsibility for day-to-day operations in the Homer News editorial office, and work under the supervision of an editor based in Kenai. Homer News staff collaborate with the Clarion and the Empire in covering regional and state news. Roughly the size of West Virginia, the Kenai Peninsula is home to about 50,000 people spread across a number of small communities. The area includes access to Kachemak Bay State Park, the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and Chugach National Forest, as well as numerous glaciers, rivers and lakes. World-class recreational opportunities include fishing, hiking, skiing, boating, camping and hunting.
