The Southern California News Group, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is seeking a high school sports reporter for the Los Angeles Daily News. As a High School Sports Reporter, you will play a pivotal role in covering and showcasing the diverse and exciting high school sports scene in the San Fernando Valley.
What you will do:
Cover high school and local sports stories in the San Fernando Valley and surrounding areas in the LA Daily news circulation footprint
Regularly cover the top high school and local athletes - stories include previews, breaking news, game coverage, profiles, features and analysis
Attend a wide range of high school sports events, including games, matches, and tournaments, to provide detailed and insightful coverage.
Work with a freelance budget to assign additional coverage in the area
Utilize social media platforms to promote articles, engage with the audience, and share live updates from games and events.
Collaborate with photographers and videographers to create multimedia content that complements written stories.
Develop and maintain relationships with local schools, coaches, and sports community members to stay informed about upcoming events and stories.
What you will bring:
Experience covering high school sports and familiarity of the San Fernando Valley community (daily newspaper preferred)
High school diploma or equivalent required; some college or a degree in journalism, communication or related field is preferred
Strong reporting, writing and deadline skills
Ability to find and tell stories that go beyond the game
Full set of digital skills - ability to break news, post quickly, engage on social media and tell stories with multimedia in a variety of formats, including newsletters and occasionally on camera
Ability to find and tell diverse stories
Travel:
Minimal out of town travel required, must be able to cover a large area in the San Fernando Valley, attending in person for multiple events each week.
The hourly wage is $19.23.
