Digital Audience Producer Internship - Summer 2024

Star Tribune offers a 10-week summer internship with our newsroom digital audience team. We select talented, driven college seniors and graduate students who can handle breaking news and enterprise stories. We expect our interns to come to us with skill and leave with polish and invaluable experience from a major-market newsroom. Interns are paid $850 a week. Interns may be able to apply for any available apprentice positions at the completion of their internship.

We expect our digital audience engagement intern to have:

Solid news judgment and experience verifying online content.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write stories.
Ability to multitask and juggle priorities on deadline.
Experience creating social content on Instagram (stories, feed posts and video), Twitter (including threaded content), Facebook and more.
Basic video/photo/visual editing skills.

This producer uses reader-engagement best practices with superior social media, data-visualization and aggregating skills to optimize all content types on the suite of StarTribune.com digital platforms. This producer works closely with digital and social media team members throughout the newsroom to maximize the reach of Star Tribune content.

Qualifications:
A solid journalism background combined with an eagerness to innovate and experiment are paramount. Candidates should have experience in daily digital journalism, strong news judgment, excellent communication skills, and a proven track record of collaboration. Must be a strong advocate for emerging digital and social tools and comfortable working with accuracy under high deadline pressure. Candidates should have familiarity with digital content management systems, or the ability to learn such skills quickly. Candidates should understand social media best practices for posting to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat, at minimum.

Top candidates can demonstrate they’re ready to make the most of this opportunity. The term will be early June to early August.

Your application, which must be uploaded by Nov. 1, should include:

Five to 10 links to digital content that you created or to brand social media posts. Digital content may include stories (reported, aggregated, audience-engagement), social videos or links to brand social promotion. (You can submit screen grabs of brand Instagram or Snapchat stories.) Applications without these submissions will not be considered.
A memo noting one thing you would change about the Star Tribune to better serve our readers, and how your skills could facilitate such an improvement.
A resume detailing your journalism experience, and three references, including their titles, phone numbers and email addresses.
Two letters of recommendation. At least one of those letters should come from an editor who has seen you work in a professional environment on deadline. Please do not submit letters of reference from fellow student journalists.
