Job Summary:
Star Tribune is hiring a correspondent for its bureau in Washington, D.C. The position involves reporting on politics and policy from the nation's capital in a way that's relevant to Minnesota readers. This reporter will follow Minnesota-connected issues and people in D.C., with particular emphasis on the state's eight U.S. House members and two U.S. senators.
Experience covering a high-profile, complex beat is required. The ability to write quick-turn spot news is important, but the successful candidate must excel at in-depth enterprise stories, as well. This correspondent will need a clear vision for long-term coverage. We will expect this reporter to follow, understand and explain in compelling ways a wide range of topics, including politics, congressional proposals, federal agencies and domestic and international issues.
Applicants must have strong reporting and writing abilities, sound news judgment and creative story ideas for digital and print. Must already have a rich network of political sources.
This reporter must be able to work quickly and under pressure, have strong communication skills and be an independent self-starter. At the same time, it's crucial to work collaboratively with reporters, team leaders, audience team, copy editors, photo and design editors and others in the Star Tribune newsroom.
