Hello, we're Starling - a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company. We're on a mission to unravel the knotty world of finance, and give people a better way to manage their money.
And how we talk is pivotal to that mission. Like our product, our voice is designed to make banking easier and demystify money. From our app copy to our T&Cs, our emails to our tube ads, our voice needs to feel consistent, engaging, jargon-free and above all, human.
The person who's right for this role will really get the nuances of tone. You'll be a writer who can find the sweet spot between conversational, grown-up and playful with ease, and who understands the fine line between chatty and annoying. You'll enjoy interrogating a brief and switching seamlessly between ad ideation, longer website copy, emails, and scripts (and won't mind doing the ‘boring' stuff, sometimes). You'll be a writer who can make people feel excited about money management (it's not always easy, and if you're right for this role, you'll think that sounds like an interesting challenge).
You'll also need to be very confident expressing ideas and defending your choices, keen to own projects, happy to get your teeth into anything, and not too fussy about following rigid processes. You'll often be faced with tight turnarounds and multiple briefs from all over the company, but the upside of our fast-paced and progressive culture is that you'll enjoy plenty of autonomy and freedom to own things. Challenging is in our DNA; we'd love it to be in yours too.
Reporting to Starling's Head of Creative (alongside three other writers and a team of designers) you'll work as part of Starling's Creative Studio, working closely with the Brand and Marketing teams.
Requirements
At least two years copywriting experience, either in-house or agency.
A varied portfolio that demonstrates both an aptitude for longer copy and flair for snappy headlines and ideation/conceptual work.
Confidence and great communication. Our writers are the guardians of our tone of voice, so you should be happy to speak up and justify your decisions and fight for your ideas.
Proven experience in transforming dry, inaccessible subjects into sparkling and easy-to-understand customer-facing copy (and a portfolio that shows it).
A self-motivated and organised attitude. It's fast-paced here, so you'll need to be able to think on your feet and manage your time and projects.
