Stars and Stripes, the editorially independent news organization for the Armed Forces, is seeking a reporter to cover the military community in the Pacific Northwest. The region is home to a number of military bases, including Joint Base Lewis McChord, Navy Base Kitsap, Naval Station Everett, and Bremerton Naval Base among others. The job may require some travel to other military installations in the western part of the United States. The successful candidate must display 21st century journalism skills, and be well-versed in social media, writing on daily print deadlines, filing quick stories for the web and taking photos/videos to engage readers across multiple platforms. Breaking news and generating in-depth stories are also key facets of the job. The successful candidate reports to an editor in Washington, D.C. but will be expected to live in the Northwest, although the precise location is negotiable. Preferred candidates are those with two years’ experience writing for a commercial news organization.
